Scope and Scale: Analysing the Environment
Outdoor networking projects have expanded significantly in both number and scale in recent years. While the COVID-19 pandemic sparked interest in at-home upgrades, the trend continues as homeowners transform their exterior spaces into technology-rich environments with all the creature comforts of their home’s interior.
“We’ve seen an increase not only in the volume of outdoor projects, but also in their complexity—some rival or even exceed the demands of indoor networks,” says Holmes, referencing a recent installation that included 36 outdoor access points across a 6-acre property. “The days of relying on indoor Wi-Fi bleeding outside are over. Today’s outdoor systems require purpose-built equipment, detailed planning and expert execution.”
Environmental Challenges, Real-World Solutions
Designing outdoor networks presents unique and shifting challenges. Soil moves, foliage grows and weather patterns change—each of which can impact performance. “Creating a resilient outdoor network is almost an artform,” says Nathan Holmes. “You have to account for environmental variables, potential interference from nearby properties, and the need to work around other elements like lighting, electrical systems, plumbing and landscaping.” Eddie Shapiro adds, “It’s critical to assess the landscape before designing a system. Understand where the swimming pool, patio and plantings are located—and anticipate how these elements may change over time as vegetation matures and the homeowner’s needs evolve. Technology will continue to advance outdoors just like it does inside, so forward-thinking design is essential. Plan ahead for power, ports, switches and conduits. You’ll also likely be coordinating with other trades who need to run cabling underground, so that has to be factored into the layout.”
Our panelists agree that defining the total coverage area from the outset is key—especially when accounting for elevation changes within the yard. “Wi-Fi operates on line-of-sight principles,” explains Holmes. “Depending on the terrain, access points may need to be installed at higher elevations or staggered strategically throughout the property.” He also recommends positioning access points to face inward toward the yard to help prevent Wi-Fi signals from spilling into neighboring properties.
Pick the Right Products for the Intended Purpose
