Kordz has made a submission to the NSW Legislative Council Public Accountability and Works Committee Inquiry into Data Centres, contributing an engineering perspective on how physical infrastructure design can influence efficiency, cooling demand and sustainability outcomes in data centre environments.

While much of the industry focus is placed on energy generation, cooling systems and server performance, the submission highlights the role of component-level infrastructure design – including connectivity and rack-level considerations – in supporting efficient and sustainable data centre operation.

Key insights:

Physical infrastructure design can influence airflow management and cooling efficiency
Small inefficiencies at rack level can scale across large facilities
Improved cable management and infrastructure layout can support thermal performance
Lifecycle considerations, including materials and durability, contribute to sustainability outcomes
As computing density increases, infrastructure design will become increasingly important
